PRE-FAB(ULOUS) HOMES
Today Ikea announced they will produce and sell prefab modular homes in the US (something they've been doing for years in Sweden). Now you can head to aisle three for light bulbs and pendant lamps, saunter down to the market area for pots and pans, take a break in the cafe for Swedish meatballs then, sandwiched between the plants and toilets, purchase your very own dream home. Or, at the very least, Ikea's idea of a dream prefab home for $80,000! The first thing that raced through my mind when I read the press release was, assembling Ikea furniture, with it's million screws and impossible-to-understand directions, can be a pain in the neck, what on earth does building an Ikea house entail? Worry not, though, because these little gems come with assembly assistance and, with their Eco-friendly materials, are far easier to construct than you might think! If a one bedroom one bath house isn't exactly what you were in the market for, the company that produces these ultra modern dwellings also offers prefab cottages, one room bungalows and three bedroom homes (www.ideabox.us), all out-of-the box. While I shiver and shake as gas prices flirt with $5/gallon and I zip down the highway in my 10 mpg SUV, I am impressed by the philosophy behind these ultra modern, totally chic structures of living a more simple, environmentally conscience life. Maybe you aren't ready to downsize your life into a 350 square foot box, but if you're looking for an innovative, inexpensive, green way to add to it...with a cottage on that vacant land you have, an office or guest house in your backyard or comfy in-law quarters...this could be the perfect solution wrapped up in a pretty little package!
