THE STRIPES ARE THE STARS
It's the 4th of July and if you're like me that can only mean one thing...the incredibly wretched hot days of summer have just begun! Ok, so I'm trying to start every day on a positive note, so let's start over...if you're like me, the 4th of July offers a great opportunity to celebrate our wonderful nations independence with family and friends and, even better, throw a themed party!!! Now THAT'S positive (and it usually means shopping, which in turn means riding around in an air-conditioned car!). I'm always looking for interesting outdoor furniture, and sometimes basics can be beautiful. Take this simple picnic table I spotted at the Home Depot (Lowe's and every other hardware store sell them too). At first glance it's an unimaginative, boring, totally vanilla piece of blah design, or at least that's what the negative part of your brain might think. The creative, happy side sees great potential...at $79 this table was a steal, and for an additional $2.50 I grabbed a sample of Retro Red paint by Behr, used a bit of white high gloss we had in the garage, and added a sassy flare to this table that was once totally bare!
QUICK TIP: If you want to spruce up an old table, lighten up a drab lamp or just add a little something to that awful thing (but don't need a lot of paint to cover the project), pick up a sample of your favorite color. It's far cheaper ($1.95-$5 depending on brand) and covers more than you'd think!
