KITSCH-IN
This isn't your Mother's kitchen...or is it? Designs of the 50's, 60's and 70's aren't only back in style, they're all over the place! Believe it or not, Kitsch is IN! Once associated with lowbrow taste and poor quality, Kitsch styles are now synonymous with contemporary, modern, trendy design. It's actually hip to be square...or round, triangular, pink, green, yellow, orange...in other words, think outside the bread box...better yet, design your kitchen around it! Above is an example of a kitchen designed around the same philosophy: take things you love (colorful bowls, a vintage clock, chandelier) and highlight them. I love to start any kitchen with a blank canvas, a simple palette and work from there. Paint the cabinets white, for example, then splash color in other areas: maybe a strip of wallpaper, bright colored back splash, open shelves (I love to remove the cabinet doors and paint the walls behind them, highlighting the dishes on the shelves), bring in an over-sized clock or paint one wall with Chalkboard paint. If it's funky, it's cool...It's one of the first rooms you see in the morning and one of the last you see before bed, so why the heck not paint it red?
