DON'T OVER SPEND, OVERSTOCK!

Before we headed east three years ago the trend in design (both fashion and interiors) was modern, modern, modern. Modern hair on a skinny, pale modern body draped in black, modern clothes perched high atop a pair of incredibly expensive, totally modern shoes. The world of Interiors also went very, very modern. From the deserts of Southern California with its mid-century modern homes initially designed for Frank Sinatra and his groupies, to the deep forests of the midwest where the Bauhaus had a huge influence on the everyday house, everyone seemed hot for a piece of the big American modern apple pie! Today that trend continues everywhere, but the definition stretches as wide as this incredibly vast country. What's modern to one might be junk to someone else. Recently asked to transform a home from 80's floral drab to modern fab (on a budget, of course), I chose to jump on my vintage computer and fly the world wide web to my favorite, inexpensive online store, Overstock.com. If you skipped into a Design Within Reach store, you'd fall over when you saw the price of these very same items (well, close enough). At Overstock the Ayers Wire chairs are under $200 FOR THE PAIR, at DWR they sell for $2,700 a piece. So, by doing a little smart shopping a designed a big house for less than the price of one little chair!
