OH SHEET!

My Philosopher father might ask, "when is a sheet not a sheet?" Well, a sheet is always a sheet but can be used in many different design applications, far beyond the confines of a twin mattress. If Sigmund Freud thought outside of the box then you, too, can think outside of your design box. Stop wrestling with your ego, super-ego and id and just go with it. In this example, I designed an office for a Television executive with high hopes and a low budget. The plan: create a relaxing, soothing environment in the middle of a sea of chaos. One way we achieved this was through soft lighting, soothing colors and fabric. I purchased low-voltage bulbs for the lamps and draped inexpensive, heavy fabrics over the window and under the skylight to soften the harsh light. Fabric can often cost more than a sofa so, with budget in mind (and pennies in hand) I headed off to one of my favorite stores for colorful, fun, inexpensive fabrics: Urban Outfitters. I used a twin bedsheet to drape under the skylight. The end result: a cheap, cheery diffuser of light and focal point in the office.
HERE'S WHAT I DID:
1.) Purchased twin bedsheet at Urban Outfitters (http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/) for $7.00
2.) Headed to Home Depot and purchased two wooden dowels, four hooks and chicken wire.
3.) Screwed hooks into dowels and ceiling, hung, draped fabric, went to lunch.
TIME TO COMPETE PROJECT: 30 minutes
COST: $15.00
STRESS LEVEL: Thanks to good lighting, NONE.
